NYFW SS 2016 Nails: Split French at Tibi

By semick

Amazing how something so simple can create such an impact—but there it is: A French manicure missing just a tiny strip of color along the free edge. That small detail completely changes this staple nail design, making it fresh and 100-percent modern. The split French in question, created by lead manicurist Jin Soon Choi for the Tibi Spring/Summer 2016 show, comes in a mélange of hues—think blue, teal, pink, purple, oxblood, orange, and cream—from her namesake polish line. After applying Tulle as a sheer base, she uses a striping brush to draw two tiny parallel lines from the free edge until about one-third down the nail. She then paints a diagonal line stemming off the bottom of the two parallel lines and leading to the sides of the nail to create the outline of her split French. To finish, Choi fills in the free edge. Most of these polish hues are from her upcoming Spring 2016 collection, and she’s quick to share that “blue and teal will be really, really big next Spring.” As will this revamp of the French, we’re predicting! —Kristyna Kane
