NYFW SS 2016 Nails: Individuality at Prabal Gurung

By semick

The nail look at Prabal Gurung comes straight from the clothes, mimicking the flow and color of dresses found in the collection. “There’s quite a bit of pastel yellow and flowing gowns, and the movement of the design was based on that,” explains Sally Hansen lead manicurist Madeline Poole, who advises the techs to just go with the flow as they paint the models’ nails. After applying two coats of Sally Hansen Mum’s the Word, the techs use a striping brush dipped in Sally Hansen Let’s Snow to draw swooping shapes on random nails. “I told everyone to take the brush and drag it wherever it feels natural on the [model’s nails],” Poole says. “It’s meant to feel like the white shape is flowing along all of the nails, coming in and out. It shouldn’t be uniform. Everyone can have their own personality.” Poole chose the white lacquer color to offset the feminine pastel yellow, giving the design a sporty edge. To smooth out the finished look, she tops the design with one coat of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Top Coat. “[The striping brush] can add chunkiness. The top coat smooths out any surface unevenness and makes it encased on one level,” she adds. —Molly Church
