Sometimes a happy accident reveals itself as the desired end result, as is the case backstage at the Rodarte Fall 2016 show. When OPI Nail Lead Alicia Torello met with the label’s design duo, Kate and Laura Mulleavy, to test what the nail look should be, Torello suggested red first. “There are a lot of rich colors in the collection, so I polished the test model with a red that matched, but the designers felt it was a bit too much,” she reports backstage. “Then they said to me, ‘What about black?’” Torello reached into her arsenal of OPI Infinite Shine shades and pulled out We’re In the Black and, for the sake of time, slapped it on top of the existing red manicure. In her haste, a bit of the crimson polish could be seen around the perimeter of the nail, and the Mulleavys liked the effect. “They didn’t want the nails to look too witchy, so this little bit of red fixed that,” she says.
Backstage, the look is more intentional. “I’m leaving a little uniform room at the sidewalls and cuticle so you see the red peeking out,” Torello says, noting that the red is OPI Infinite Shine in Raisin the Bar. “I think that the layering creates depth to the look. Your mind almost plays a trick on you when you see that red—like the whole nail is red, even though it’s black,” she says. “It’s romantic and subtle.” And not at all witchy. —Karie L. Frost
