Stamping is supposed to give nails perfectly shaped patterns with just the light tough of a stamp — but it can be tricky if you don’t have the right technique. If you’ve never tried nail stamping, or your past attempts have resulted in a big, smudged messes, it’s time to try this tutorial! Jahaira of @jarynails shows you the tips you need to make your stamping a success!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Acetone
  • Glitter nail polish: China Glaze Glitz ‘N Pieces
  • Zoya Storm and Purity for base colors
  • Konad white nail polish for stamping
  • Konad stamper and scraper (swiper)
  • Bundle Monster stamping plate BM-322
  • Cotton ball
  • Q-tip
  • Glisten & Glow HK Girl Top Coat
  • Paper towel
  • STEP 1

Paint your nails with your base nail polish (Zoya). Using a Q-tip, clean any nail polish from the skin. After clean up, give enough time for nails to dry completely.

  • STEP 2

Gather your stamping tools along with a cotton ball soaked with acetone.

  • STEP 3

Choose your design and cover it with white nail polish for stamping (the next steps should be done as quickly as possible).

  • STEP 4

Swipe any excess from the plate with the scraper or swiper. You should see the image clearly on the plate. Do not let the polish sit too long as it will dry fast. Do not let it dry or it won't stick to the stamper. SPEED IS KEY.

  • STEP 5

Take the stamper and push it against the image. If done correctly, you should see the image on the stamper.

  • STEP 6

Your image on stamper should look like this. If it doesn't work, don't worry; using the acetone-dipped cotton ball, clean the plate and stamper and let it dry. Make sure there are no fibers on the stamper so it won't mess the design. Repeat steps 6 thru 8 until you get a great image transfer. Lots of patience is necessary!

  • STEP 7

Quickly stamp the image onto nail. On your left hand, stamp from right to left and for your right hand, stamp left to right.

  • STEP 8

Your image should look like this on your nails. Repeat steps 6-10 for the other nails. Always clean the plate and stamper with acetone in between stamping each nail. Clean up of excess will come after you're done stamping.

  • STEP 9

Use a Q-tip soaked with acetone to clean up any residue of polish from stamping off the skin.

  • STEP 10

Add glitter to your accent nails, ring finger, and thumb (not pictured). Add top coat for a very glossy finish. Some top coats may smudge the design.

All done! A lot of practice and patience should lead to a lot of fun. Good luck!
