Nail Art How To: Rainbow Feather Nails

  • INTRODUCTION

Remember scratch paper? That black art paper that revealed a neon array of colors beneath the surface when scratched totally floored us as kids. With the simple touch of a wood stick, our art lit up right before our eyes! These feather nails do exactly the same thing; bright acrylic paints jump off a dark black canvas. To recreate that same childhood feeling of wonder, Vatsana of Bedizzle Nails showed us exactly how to paint these nails ourselves. Click through to see.

    SLIDE 1 OF 15
  • TOOLS

    Supplies Needed:

    Sinful Colors Black on Black
    Seche Vite top coat
    Winstonia brush #000
Acrylic paints from craft store (green, blue, purple, pink, orange, yellow, and white)

    SLIDE 2 OF 15
  • STEP 1

    Paint all your nails black.

    SLIDE 3 OF 15
  • STEP 2

First draw the shaft of the feather as a thin, fine line that curves across the nails.

    SLIDE 4 OF 15
  • STEP 3

Dip your brush into the blue acrylic paint, but only use the tiniest amount possible to get the precise and clean feather look. Add short strokes to both sides of the center line. This part can get tricky but you'll get a hang of it after a few tries.

    SLIDE 5 OF 15
  • STEP 4

Continue to add short strokes to the center line; this time with green acrylic paint.

    SLIDE 6 OF 15
  • STEP 5

    Add yellow strokes.

    SLIDE 7 OF 15
  • STEP 6

    Add orange strokes.

    SLIDE 8 OF 15
  • STEP 7

    Add pink strokes.

    SLIDE 9 OF 15
  • STEP 8

    Add purple strokes.

    SLIDE 10 OF 15
  • STEP 9

Now go back to the blue and continue to add short strokes to the line. Start tapering the feather from this point on by making strokes a little shorter than the ones before.

    SLIDE 11 OF 15
  • STEP 10

Add more green strokes. We're almost done with the feather at this point.

    SLIDE 12 OF 15
  • STEP 11

Add more yellow strokes. Further taper the feather.

    SLIDE 13 OF 15
  • STEP 12

Add orange strokes to the very top of the feather. Remember to taper the end of the feather so it looks realistic!

    SLIDE 14 OF 15
  • STEP 13

And that's it!  Now add topcoat to the nails and clean up the mess around the cuticles and you're done!
