Oh My Gosh! Polish is fueled by the creativity of none other than the artistic-minded Tammy Unwin. She’s a huge influencer in the nail art community, mobilizing so many others to try out designs similar to hers. See where this nail art master gets her own inspiration and try it for yourself!
What got you into nail art?
Well, I’ve always been surrounded by art. My mother, Wendy Nash, is an art therapist and an artist in her own right. I have been painting my nails since I was a teenager and even though I was a nail biter off and on since I was a child, I always loved the feeling I got when they were healthy and growing.
I guess the obsession was fueled when I came across a watermarbling video on YouTube by Collette from My Simple Little Pleasures, and although I was familiar with watermarbling though my Mother, I was literally floored to see someone doing that on nails!! This led me to enter what I like to call “YouTube University” and that’s when I discovered Robin Moses. Now Robin just sent my creative juices into overdrive! And I haven’t looked back since!
How long have you been posting your photos of nail art on Instagram and how did it start?
Well one of my first nail photos was actually of my toes! I painted them green and gold for Australia Day back in January 2012. I actually started doing my niece Tayla’s nails and her friend Sara’s nails and posting them back in March 2012.
What has been your favorite part about it?
Learning all the time! And meeting new people!! In particular Bernadette (ig: @bdettenails) who I met back at the beginning of March this year, I don’t know why or how, but we have become the closest of friends, brought together through our love of polish and nail art! (Even though I have to push her out of her swatching comfort zone sometimes and into the nail art world, but when I do she excels every time!)
Also, Amanda (ig: @madamluck) inspires me through her epic nail art! I speak to both of these lovely ladies almost every day via Skype even though they live in the US and myself in Australia; we don’t let the time zone differences get in the way.
The Instagram nail community is just wonderful and for the most part everyone is extremely supportive of each other.
What is your favorite nail trend?
Oh, gosh there are so many! I think glow in the dark has my heart, although not sure if it’s a “trend” …but it totally should be!
What sort of glow in the dark polishes do you use?
Polish Me To Go is my go-to glow In the dark Polish. When it comes to my blacklight glowy photos, I use any polish that has a fluro pigment in it. In fact, every bottle of polish that comes into my house gets tested under my blacklight to see if it glows! The Minions were done with all Polish Me To Go glow in the dark polishes. First shot is taken under a Blacklight. Second is pure glow in the dark! 😉
What do your friends and family say about your blog and your following online?
Hmmm. Sometimes I think they think it’s a fad and I’ll be doing it for a while and then move onto something else…. I can’t see that happening… ever!
My mother is extremely supportive and comments on my pics all the time.
What is your absolute favorite color of polish?
Bright minty green! Picture Polish Honey Dew is an all time favorite! It’s the perfect color for a pedi in summer.
Which celebrity’s nails would you jump at the chance to design?
P!nk, Katy Perry or Zooey Deschanel’s.
What else would you be doing if you hadn’t ended up getting into nail art?
Probably painting or pottery, (I actually studied Pottery at TAFE) or both.
What is your favorite beauty tool or nail art tool?
My JN Dance 24 Detail Brush and my clean up brush.
What is your favorite nail design you’ve done? How did you come up with it?
My second Dan Roots-inspired mani. I just happened to come across one of his artworks on the Popular page on Instagram and was so taken by his style that I did a mani inspired by it. I decided to follow his account as I didn’t want to miss out on more inspiration! He posted a photo of a rainbow tree which I just couldn’t resist trying out.
The original inspiration from IG @danroots.
I get my inspiration from so many places, whether it be other nail artists, traditional artists, a request from a follower, even the time of the year! Most of the time I’ll look at the polishes I have (yes! it’s a LOT!) and depending on my mood, I’ll search Google images by putting in just the color and see what I can come up with from that.
