Indie Polish Spotlight: Virago Varnish

Indie Polish Spotlight: Virago Varnish

By semick

Find out how a happy accident created some of Adrienne Wonzo’s totally cool, layered looks for her polish brand, Virago Varnish as we sit down for a one-on-one with her.

Us: How long have you been making your own polish?
I started making polish in early 2014 and officially launched Virago Varnish on September 25, 2014.

What makes your line of lacquers unique?
I feel that offering a variety of polishes is what makes Virago Varnish different. I don’t just focus on one type of polish, I can create something for everyone. I offer multiple shades varying from light to dark, and in various finishes like crèmes, holographics, and micro-glitters.

Do any of your polishes have a totally different look layered over a colored base?
Yes! Recently, I was mixing up a batch of I Need Some Space and spilled it all over my nails, when I looked down at what happened, my jaw dropped. At the time, I was wearing Noir, by Virago Varnish; My nails looked like a pink colored galaxy.

Is there a story behind your brand’s name?
I wanted a unique name that represented a strong-willed, determined woman. So I went with Virago, and to complete the name, my children suggested, Varnish. Thus, Virago Varnish was born.

What is your best seller right now?
My best seller is Allure. It’s a silver, holographic micro-glitter polish. Customers say it looks like crushed diamonds, and that they can’t help but stare at their nails when they wear it. It is definitely a stunner!

What is your favorite polish you’ve ever created?
That’s tough because I love all my babies. That’s like asking a mother who her favorite child is. If I had to choose my most favorite, it would be Crisp. It’s my go-to polish; I’ve worn it year round.

What’s one tip you wished you knew when you started your own indie line?
I wish I would have known how much time was needed to run “Virago Varnish”. I eat, breathe, and sleep Virago Varnish. I haven’t taken one day off since I started the line. I have tried several times to have, what I call, “No Polish Days”, and it never happens. But, it’s totally worth it in the end because I truly love what I do.

Any spoilers you’d like to share about your future collections?
I’m super excited for my upcoming Ugly Christmas Sweater collection for the holidays. This collection is going to be a fun one! Stay tuned!
