Meet Dominique T. A year and a half ago this stay at home mom began making nail polish to entertain her creativity and now has her very own indie polish line, Tux Polish. Read our Q&A with her below!
Nail It!: How long have you been making your own polish?
T: I began making nail polish with the intention of starting a business about a year and a half ago.
What’s your “day job”?
I’m a stay at home mom of four amazing kids under the age of five, including a set of triplets.
How did you begin creating your own polishes?
After having my triplets 4 years ago, I had to quit my job and stay at home with them (daycare for three is no joke!). Putting three newborns in daycare wasn’t something my husband and I could afford then. Over time my kids had become a little more independent and I started looking into some things I could do to be creative and productive. That’s how I started making polish. I actually launched Tux when my youngest was about a week old.
What makes your line of lacquers unique?
I feel like one thing that makes Tux Polish unique is the variety that we offer in our collections. I really love to mix it up and offer different finishes and different types of polish in a single collection. I love making cremes, crellys, holos, glitter bombs, and everything in-between. I also keep an eye on what’s already out there in mainstream and indie polish, and I try to create colors and shades that you won’t find anywhere else.
Do any of your polishes have a totally different look layered over a colored base?
Yes, one of our new colors “Heart on My Sleeve” looks so beautiful over light and dark colors as well as on it’s own. Also, our glitter topper “Jingle All the Nails” looks amazing over nudes, pinks, blues, reds and pretty much anything. It’s so fun over nail art too! You can really get creative with it.
Is there a story behind your brand’s name?
Sort of. I really wanted a three letter word as my brand’s name. I thought it would look good on a bottle to have three letters for some reason. I thought about how I feel more dressed up when I paint my nails. Tux comes from the word tuxedo, which we all know people wear for dressy occasions. I want people to wear Tux Polish and feel a little more dressed up for their day because that always makes me feel good. Everything can be a mess: clothes, hair, whatever, but if you look down at your hands and you have pretty nails, you feel pretty. That’s a feeling I want to give my customers and I think the name “Tux” is fitting.
What’s the inspiration behind your lacquer colors?
So many things inspire my polish creations. Sometimes I’m inspired by a fun name that my husband or I thought of, an outfit, or even an emotion or experience. One of my best sellers “Can’t Wait to Cuddle” was created around the feeling I get of wanting to cuddle up with my husband or kids as the weather cools down on a cloudy day in the fall. It was just such a random thought and I wasn’t sure I could pull off the color that I envisioned for that feeling. But when it released it sold out in a day and I was shocked. I get such awesome feedback about how unique that color is and I love how it came to be.
What is your best seller right now?
Two polishes are really neck-in-neck when it comes to bestseller right now. “Homecoming Queen” and “Elderberry”. I’ve restocked Homecoming Queen so many times at this point that I could probably make it in my sleep.
What is your favorite polish you’ve ever created?
That’s so hard because I really love every color. Maybe I can say a top three if I try…I think my favorite right at this very second is “Eternity” from our Season of Love collection that’s about to be released. I’ve been wearing it as much as I can lately! Purple is my favorite color and this one is truly stunning! Another is “Heart on My Sleeve.” It’s mesmerizing in the sun and so fun and unique. One of my all time favorites is also “Bad Santa.” It’s a Christmas crelly polish that I am obsessed with. I cannot wait to bring it back for the holidays! Oh, and “Vampire Punch”! It was the first holographic polish I ever made and the first holo polish I had ever worn. I swear it’s the perfect red…See, I can’t just pick one!
Other than your own, what’s your favorite brand of polish to use?
I honestly don’t wear any other polish anymore since I am constantly testing my own, but I can’t live without my Essie Good to Go Top Coat. It’s my favorite.
What’s one tip you wished you knew when you started your own indie line?
I wish I had known more about doing and photographing my own nails before I started. I’ve always polished my nails, but it’s been really beneficial for me to be able to do my nails well and understand how to make them look good in photos to showcase my polish. I’m definitely still learning when it comes to “swatching”, hand poses, nail art, and product photography, but it’s been surprisingly fun to get into. I try to share most of my progress (or lack there of) on our Instagram, @tuxpolish. Doing my nails and taking care of them also inspired me to create our new Beurre Blanc cuticle treatment, which has been amazing for my nails and cuticles.
Any spoilers you’d like to share about your future collections?
We are releasing a great new collection called “Season of Love” on Friday, February 5, 2016. It’s my take on a Valentine’s Day-ish collection. I’m also working on a possible all creme collection for the spring. I’m having fun experimenting right now so I’m pretty excited for the future!
