Indie Polish Spotlight: The Lacquer Lab

Indie Polish Spotlight: The Lacquer Lab

05.30.14

By Elma

Meet Emily Valentine Parr, the polish maker behind The Lacquer Lab. Get to know her and her indie brand better as we ask her a few questions about her business.

How long have you been making your own polish?
We started mixing lacquers back in December 2013 but officially launched to market in February 2014.

What’s your “day job”? How did you begin creating your own polishes?
I am lucky enough to say The Lacquer Lab is my day job! I worked in beauty advertising for a few years after university where I studied fashion and journalism but never felt like I was getting enough job satisfaction or the chance to flex my creative side. One day I just thought “f**k it!” I left my job and threw myself headfirst into mixing nail lacquers. I’ve never been busier in my life but I wouldn’t trade it for anything because I get 100% job satisfaction everyday, and that’s priceless.

What makes your line of lacquers unique?
We are proud to be an indie nail brand making waves for Britain on the nail scene. TLL pioneers ethical, 5-free nail polishes that are free of five nasty and unnecessary chemicals that are in many leading brands (Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, DPB, Camphor and Toluene). As a small brand with fashion at its heart we have the ability to react quickly to trends in fashion and channel them into our lacquers without having to deal with outside suppliers and red tape. It’s fast, fun and reactive!

Do any of your polishes have a totally different look layered over a colored base?
We have recently launched our Dream Coats Collection (pictured up top): 5 hand mixed, glitterbomb creations, each with its own distinct personality, designed for layering over your favorite lacquer to create dazzling, glitter gradients or rocking alone. Our best sellers are Diamantes & Disco and Kate & Wills.

What’s the inspiration behind your lacquer colors?
The London Fashion scene is our main influencer as well as the online indie nail community. Girls in London know how to put together an outfit in an inspiring and truly unique way, which is what we channel into our lacquer mixes. TLL takes style all the way to the fingertips.

What is your best seller right now?
Our best seller changes all the time, but 3 long standing best sellers are Joy Ride, which is a perfect minty crème hue, perfect for summer, New Coat which is a unique salmon-pink hue from the Studio Collection and Dita, our most popular nude shade, part of ourNaked Ladies line up.

What is your favorite polish you’ve ever created?
Blue Jean Baby is my perfect shade. A stunning French Navy; demure and sophisticated, but an interesting choice for a manicure, which gives it an edge.

Other than your own, what’s your favorite brand of polish to use?
Our terrific formula often gets compared to Zoya when being reviewed, which is a huge compliment because their polishes have fantastic consistency and usability.

What’s one tip you wished you knew when you started your own indie line?
How hard it would be trying to turn off the business brain! When you run your own business, you are always working.

Any spoilers you’d like to share about your future collections?

We have some bangin’ summer collections being mixed up in the lab right now! I took a trip to a very vibrant, African city that has had a huge influence on our first summer collection dropping in June!
