Indie Polish Spotlight: Stardust Polish

Indie Polish Spotlight: Stardust Polish

11.02.13

By Rokon

Just the name of Stardust Polish gets us in the mood for a magical, life-changing manicure. And the brand lives up to that — these lacquers are shiny and glimmer without an overbearing dose of glitter (just see Royalty, below). We caught up with polish maker Drema Dixon to talk about her experience as a polish maker.

Nail It!: How long have you been making your own polish?
Drema: I have been making polish since March 2013.

How did you begin creating your own polishes?
I actually started making polish just as a hobby. I was a housewife and while my husband was gone on an eight-day snowboarding trip to Canada I decided I would try making polish. I never dreamed it would turn into an actual business but I am very thankful that it has; I love creating polishes people want to wear.

What makes your line of lacquers unique?
I believe what makes my lacquers unique is my process. I spend a significant amount of time and supplies developing one color (and probably drive my husband nuts when I get so frustrated).  Sometimes it can take months and twenty different attempts to get the polish just right.  I also make my polish in very small batches, only four at a time.

Is there a story behind your brand’s name?
As all my friends know I am a HUGE science/space nerd and I love everything science/space related. It took me weeks to come up with my business name and I decided on Stardust while watching an episode of Nova on PBS. The episode was about space and I learned that 93% of the mass in our body is stardust. I found that fact so interesting and it seemed like a natural fit for a business name for me.

What’s the inspiration behind your lacquer colors?
My inspiration is honestly all over the place but it always seems to come to me when I should be sleeping. It is usually things I absolutely love like space and Alice in Wonderland but sometimes it is something I read or see in nature.

Royalty Stradust Polish

What is your best seller right now?
Right now I have two polishes that are selling equally, Royalty (above) and Yes Your Majesty (below).

Stardust Polish Yes Your Majesty

What is your favorite polish you’ve ever created?
My favorite polish I have ever created is Black Hole, a semi metallic black holo.

Stardust Polish Deja Blue

Other than your own, what’s your favorite brand of polish to use?
My favorite brand of polish to use is OPI.

Do any of your polishes have a totally different look layered over a colored base?
I have 4 different polishes, Deja Blue (blue), Irish Fields (green), Regal (purple) and Sorcery (blue, green & purple) that are all microflakie toppers that can be layered over any color for a different look.

Any spoilers you’d like to share about your future collections?
In my next collection based on Clue the movie I may have another thermal and a glow in the dark, but you will have to wait and see!
