Indie Polish Spotlight: Stached Polish

Indie Polish Spotlight: Stached Polish

By semick

Meet Holly Nunes. She’s an administrative assistant at a large pharmaceutical company and just entered the indie lacquer business a few months ago with her brand, Stached Polish. Read our Q&A with her below!

Nail It!: How did you begin creating your own polishes?

Nunes: I started making polish after complaining to my husband about how much some of the polishes I wanted so bad are going for. I have a full-time day job and consistently miss out on pre-orders or restocks, so once I find the color I want the price is usually marked way up. That’s very unfortunate, (when people are buying just to resell) and I believe anyone should be able to get the color they want for the actual retail cost.

What makes your line of lacquers unique?

My polish is 5-free (free of camphor, toluene, formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate or formaldehyde resins) and cruelty-free as well. I like to create unique colors that I have not seen anywhere yet. Currently everyone is introducing a “neon collection” so I plan on staying far away from neons. I have the belief that everyone should be able to get the color they want at retail value, so I am working hard to make sure I can keep polish in stock, so it’s not as difficult to find! I also name the colors after books that have made a lasting impression on me.

Do any of your polishes have a totally different look layered over a colored base?

Technological Development looks quite a bit different over different colors! It is white crelly polish with pink micro glitter, so you can layer it over itself for the layered glitter look (which I personally, LOVE), or you can put it on top of a cream white or even over Planetary Resources!

Is there a story behind your brand’s name?

I think as a lot of shop owners know, naming a brand can sometimes be the hardest part about opening a shop! While testing polish the first couple of months, I went back and forth on several different names. I never had quite the response I was looking for when I would ask friends for opinions. One day my husband was kidding around with me about shaving off his beard, and it just popped into my head – Stached! I have some friends who also “stash” their polish away from their husbands when they get it…especially when they are on a no buy. I thought the play on words would be perfect! When I started putting feelers out there to friends and family about the name, they thought it was perfect!

What’s the inspiration behind your lacquer colors?

I have very nerdy interests that have been my inspiration! I have used the book series Starstruck, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings as my inspiration so far!

What is your best seller right now?

So far, my best seller is The Ministry, which is inspired by the Ministry of Magic from Harry Potter!

What is your favorite polish you’ve ever created?

My favorite polish is a toss-up between Planetary Resources & Hobbiton. I really like the formula of Planetary Resources, so it’s been on my nails the most, but Hobbiton inspired my all-time favorite pineapple manicure!

Other than your own, what’s your favorite brand of polish to use?

I’m a big fan of Lilypad Lacquer, Chaos & Crocodiles, & Essie! There are so many great brands out there, and they are all so inspiring to see doing so well!

Any spoilers you’d like to share about your future collections?

At this time, all I can say is that you’ll be seeing a lot more polishes that have fandoms, along with lines that aren’t so nerdy as well!
