Meet Karen Jo Q. Custodio, creator of Sincerely Polish. She chose the name to reflect how each polish is created…with care, love and sincerity. Learn more about her handmade lacquer brand in this Q&A!
How long have you been making your own polish?
I would say about 3 years. I officially opened my online shop on November 10, 2013, but I was already experimenting and mixing up prototypes a few months before that.
What’s your “day job”?
I am an Administrative Accountant Assistant for a small property management and investment company. I help with payroll processing, balancing journal entries, reconciling expenses and other accounting related tasks. I’ve learned a lot about budgeting, recording expenses, keeping track of cash flow and spending wisely which is very helpful in planning the financial aspect of Sincerely Polish.
How did you begin creating your own polishes?
Creativity plays an important role in the way I express myself. I’ve done arts and crafts since I was a little girl, pottery, sketching, painting, and got really obsessed with scrapbooking. I just love turning my ideas into something concrete that I can share with other people. About 3 years ago, I was just learning how to do nail art when I stumbled on the “nail community” on Instagram and discovered the indie polish world. I quickly fell in love with the idea of creating my own nail polishes. Within a few months after doing my research, I ordered my supplies and began mixing away. It wasn’t an easy process and there have been many failed attempts and glitter spills, but in the end, it’s all worth it because I get to have fun and play with glitters… A LOT of glitters! And anything that sparkles really makes everything better!
Do any of your polishes have a totally different look layered over a colored base?
Glitter toppers always have a unique look over colored bases. For example, Spring-Kles looks great without a base, but it’s definitely stunning over different colored bases. The soft pastel glitters and shimmers just pop and create a lovely whimsical look.
What’s the inspiration behind your lacquer colors?
I’m inspired by what I love and enjoy so many of my polishes and collections are based on my favorite TV shows, movies, books, musicians etc. I’m also a hopeless romantic and a dreamer so I’m usually drawn to fairytales, romance and anything Disney-related because they bring out the kid in me and remind me of many happy memories. And that’s exactly what I want my customers to feel and experience when they wear my polishes. I want them to have fun and also feel a sense of connection to my Sincerelies. I love it when customers say, “That polish is totally me!” There’s just no better feeling than creating something that makes other people happy and excited.
What is your best seller right now?
It changes all the time and varies for each collection I release. Two of my current best sellers are Ariel from the Simple Enchanted Collection, and Revengeful Red Queen from the Villainous Vixens 2.0 Collection.
What is your favorite polish you’ve ever created?
Picking just one favorite is quite difficult! I put a lot of love in all my creations so they have all been my favorite at one point or another. Currently, some of my favorites are Unforgiving Ursula, Snow White and Diamond Lust.
Any spoilers you’d like to share about your future collections?
I’m always writing and brainstorming ideas for upcoming collections. Right now, I’m working on something “magical,” “enchanting,” and “shimmery.” My reopens Saturday May 31, 2015 at 11:00am PST, so if you are dying for some sneak peeks and reveals, make sure you are following me on Instagram!
