Meet Mohrayma Chavez, indie polish guru behind Sassy Cats Lacquer – and creator of thermals that sell out (multiple times) the weekend they’re released!
Us: How long have you been making your own polish?
Mohrayma: I opened sassy cats lacquer in the end of July 2013, I make one year pretty soon, I am excited.
What’s your “day job”?
I am an account sales consultant at a major cell phone company. I love talking and interacting with people and helping them decide what is fitting to their lifestyle.
How did you begin creating your own polishes?
This all started from hoarding polishes. I always had a hard time finding exactly what I would look for. I was a nail girl who discovered Instagram. When I first logged on to Instagram my screen name was sassynaildesigns. This how I discovered indie polishes and thought, Why am I not doing this? I did a lot of research and testing and Sassy Cats Lacquer was born.
What makes your line of lacquers unique?
My cat charms: they are automatically included with every purchase and can be used as a necklace or bracelet charm.
Do any of your polishes have a totally different look layered over a colored base?
I have a few polishes that are clear base glitter bomb toppers. Take Aly Mae (rainbow glitter bomb) andImmortal Cyn (duo chrome glitter bomb), for example. These two polishes are named after two Instagram nail girls who I collaborated with for the IG Girls collection. Together we created polish based on what they thought they would look like if they were nail polish.
I also have fine glitter polishes that you can have different looks with. For example, you can either do one coat of Mermaid’s Grotto over a colored base or wear it by itself by painting three coats.
Is there a story behind your brand’s name?
This part was pretty easy; I of course did some research first before choosing it. Sassy Cats Lacquer comes from my two lovely cats. They are the sassiest cats ever! They absolutely run my household. I also tend to give good sass myself, but my cats have me beat. With the latest nail shapes that look like cat claws, it was just so fitting and the name means so much to me.
What’s the inspiration behind your lacquer colors?
I am self inspired, I love playing with colors and having tons of options. I then decide which ones are fit as a collection. I can sit and stare at the colors for hours and it will hit me. For example the fantasy collection, the colors are vivid and sparkly and just make me thing of pixies and mermaids. I named them accordingly. This collection consists of Pixie Wings, Siren Dreams, Mermaid’s Grotto and Enchanted.
What is your best seller right now?
My current best seller is Peach-Mango. This is a gorgeous thermal (color-changing) polish. This sold out three different times during the launch weekend. I literally ran out of everything to make it. It was so exciting. This is part of my all-thermal Summer Sorbet collection. It is unbelievable eye candy and you will want to eat your nails – in a good way of course.
What is your favorite polish you’ve ever created?
Gosh, this is a tough question. I always have a favorite with each collection. But if I had to pick just one, I would have to go with I Pink I’m Purple. This one was named by a great supporter and fellow Instagram nail girl. I love interacting with my followers; they come up with some great names. This polish is my fave because it is a thermal that changes colors from purple to pink with a beautiful red shimmer. I love making pink and purple polishes.
Other than your own, what’s your favorite brand of polish to use?
My favorite commercial brand is OPI. I like so many indies, but most of my purchases are Liquid Glam Lacquer.
