Indie Polish Spotlight: Pretty Serious Cosmetics

By Fefe
Husband and wife team Kaz and Ben Harris have built up the widely successful Pretty Serious Cosmetics, with products selling out in less than thirty seconds! Want to do the same? Read on to know these two polish makers better.

Us: How long have you been making your own polish?
Kaz: We launched our polish line in May 2012, but planning began in around August 2011.

How did you begin creating your own polishes?
As a huge nail polish fan, I’d always dreamed of having my own line (what nail polish lover hasn’t!) and when the opportunity arose to make that dream a reality, I wasn’t going to let it slip by!

What makes your line of lacquers unique?
I think both my husband and I put so much of ourselves into the colors we create and the names we give them that it’s impossible for them not to be unique. We’ve always just made stuff that we liked and thought was cool. Thankfully the rest of the world thought it was great too! Plus, the artwork and design we have courtesy of Canadian artist Leigh Young makes us stand out in the crowd.

Is there a story behind your brand’s name?
There is. Before I was a polish entrepreneur, I was a blogger. I started my blog Pretty Random back in 2007, and although I haven’t had the time for it lately, it still remains one of my loves. My husband thought Pretty Serious would be a great name to tie my polish brand to my blog for those that were readers to recognize our new brand.

What’s the inspiration behind your lacquer colors?
I’ve always been a big fan of “vintage” polish: older discontinued brands and shades. The original Hard Candy line, Urban Decay and Revlon’s Streetwear did amazing things for the polish world in the 90’s. Some of those old bottles still remain my favorites, and are a definite inspiration.

What is your best seller right now?
Our best seller right now would have to be The Pink One, followed by one of our original shades, BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death — a shimmery blue shade).

What is your favorite polish you’ve ever created?
My personal favorite would have to be our They Came From Beyond Space trio. Fabulous foil multichromes that just exceeded our expectations.

Other than your own, what’s your favorite brand of polish to use?
I barely have time to keep up with what’s new these days, but I would have to say Nails Inc. I am such a fan of their gorgeous colours. Their glitters are just unparalleled in quality.

Do any of your polishes have a totally different look layered over a colored base?
Mummy Mush and My Darlin’ Clementine have a completely different look over black, and Party By The Pool has a gorgeous depth to it over a darker color as well.

Any spoilers you’d like to share about your future collections?
Just that we have been “collaborating” with a few influential people in the nail community as of late, and all will be revealed very soon!
