Meet Katherine Pham Tran, the “kpt” behind Polished by KPT – an indie brand that premiered about two years ago.
Us: What’s your “day job”?
Katherine: Prior to starting Polished by KPT, I worked with the American Red Cross and UC San Diego Thornton Hospital as a full-time lab technician. I also completed my education and became a licensed respiratory therapist before realizing my passion for creative crafts and cosmetics. So I left the healthcare profession to become a licensed manicurist to start Polished by KPT beauty and health products.
How did you begin creating your own polishes?
Like many indie enthusiasts, I created my own polishes because I love doing manicures and I wanted to have a certain look or quality. When I couldn’t find certain colors I liked, I would create them for personal use.
What makes your line of lacquers unique?
In addition to being a 5-free, cruelty free, and vegan brand, we offer unique thermal polishes (AKA temperature-induced color-changing polishes). The thermal transitions range from basic thermal to holographic glitter thermal to polychromatic thermal.
Do any of your polishes have a totally different look layered over a colored base?
Yes, because we specialize in thermal nail lacquer, our thermal can be worn on its own or layer over a color base. Once layered over a color base, the warm sensitive transitioning will be the base color. It can also be worn with glitter or matte topcoat to give it a different finish.
For example, above @wackylaki is using two of our thermals called Belle Ami and Fall-O-You both of which transition to grey. @wackylaki used the taping method to create the design showing all the polishes colors.
Is there a story behind your brand’s name?
KPT is my initials, which is short for Katherine Pham Tran. Our motivation is to polish people through our products to make them feel beautiful and unique because we strive to be different from mass-produced lacquers. Moreover, the important objectives at Polished by KPT is to have a purpose beyond beauty to advocate for women issues and to collaborate with talented indie artists to promote handcrafted products.
What is your best seller right now?
For 2014, our best seller was Same Fall Different Beginning from the Paris & Me collection, but recently Mars Escapade from Cosmic XOdus 1 is becoming very popular.
What is your favorite polish you’ve ever created?
A favorite polish is the thermal lacquer Do You Wanna Fanta (shown in cover photo) because it was a unique and beautiful color combination that was inspired by the summer’s sunset.
