This week, meet Shaneka McDonald, the creator of indie brand Polish My Life. All her polishes have a smooth, flawless finish – and perfect color. Before we start drooling over the swatches, we’ll move on to the Q&A portion with Shaneka.
Us: So, what’s your “day job”?
Shaneka: I work for Sephora during the day. I love my position in the company. Working on both of my passions (cosmetics and nail polish) at the same time has given me new life! I’m definitely in my element!
How long have you been making your own polish?
Since August 16, 2013.
How did it all begin?
There was a time about 4 years ago when I wanted the perfect “coral/orange” color. After searching and searching and nearly week of buying polishes, I had accumulated over 15 bottles of coral and orange nail polishes. I began mixing and mixing. I gave up and began ordering a little pigment and glitter here and there. I did make a couple of polishes for my own use, but never shared them. Then two years ago, I wore one of my mixes and received so many compliments. That’s when I decided this could be something awesome and legit.
What makes your line of lacquers unique?
The indie polish business is very competitive. There are so many creative minds behind so many of the brands I love, but I wanted to be different. There were also not many indie brands focusing on crème polishes at the time. I decided to focus on making crème polishes that provided full, opaque coverage. I did try my hand at glitter mixes with my first two collections, but I realized early on that my crèmes were special. That’s my niche.
Is there a story behind your brand’s name?
I polish my nails based upon my mood. My life is a mix serious events, and my nails reflect those events. Hence the name!
What’s the inspiration behind your lacquer colors?
What is your best seller right now? My best seller is the A Time to Chill collection. The collection includes 5 pastel shades with a neon undertone.
Polish My Life Pumpkin Mashup
What is your favorite polish you’ve ever created?
Pumpkin Mashup is definitely my favorite!
Other than your own, what’s your favorite brand of polish to use?
My favorite indie lines are: Lacquerlicious, Pipe Dream Polish, Polish Addict Nail Color, and Love, Angeline. My favorite mainstream brands are: Dior, Butter London, Formula X by Sephora, and OPI.
What’s one tip you wished you knew when you started your own indie line?
The amount of time invested on a day-to-day basis is pretty insane, but I love it!
Any spoilers you’d like to share about your future collections?
My Fall 2014 collection will be 6 crèmes, with a guest star appearance from another indie polish brand!
