If you’re a glitter fanatic (it’s okay, we are, too), then Pinwheel Polish is your brand. Janna Garcia began creating lacquers on her own when she found that the colors on the market at the time didn’t have the glitz she was searching for. Now she’s running her own shop and taking inspiration from her favorite movies (like her My Favorite Halloween Movies line) and TV shows (e.g., Daria). See what Janna’s mixing up next in our Q&A session with the polish maker!
Nail It!: How long have you been making your own polish?
Janna: I began experimenting with polish making in December 2012.
How did you begin creating your own polishes?
I’ve always had a love for glitter polishes. I came to realize at the time that there weren’t many big companies creating the glitter combos I was looking for, so I decided to look into making my own. I took my time doing research and experimenting with my products and finally found my niche.
What makes your line of lacquers unique?
I like to believe that every polish should sparkle, so there’s always some form of shimmer in my polishes, but my specialty are glitter bombs.
Is there a story behind your brand’s name?
Pinwheels have always held a sentimental value for me, I included them in my wedding flowers and I also have a pinwheel tattoo. I think they’re timeless.
What’s the inspiration behind your lacquer colors?
My inspiration comes from my childhood favorites such as TV shows, movies, books — anything that leaves an impression on me.
What is your best seller right now?
Fairy Fallout has always been popular. It’s a gorgeous holographic glitter topper that includes large dots and hex shaped glitter.
What is your favorite polish you’ve ever created?
My favorite would have to be The Monster Squad for My Favorite Halloween Movies Collection. It’s like a mini mosaic of sparkling, rich colors.
Other than your own, what’s your favorite brand of polish to use?
I love Sinful Colors, they’re inexpensive, long lasting and have a wide range of colors.
Do any of your polishes have a totally different look layered over a colored base?
Most of my polishes give different effects to different colors but one of my newest is Autumn Air, a tinted jelly base that has iridescent glitters. It has amazing flashes of green, gold and orange depending how it hits the light.
Any spoilers you’d like to share about your future collections?
It’s a secret but I promise they’ll be glittery!
