Meet Jeanine Rodriguez-Figueroa, the fearless do-it-yourself-er behind Krafty Gurl Nail Dazzle. Her indie lacquers boast a 5-free base and she guarantees each bottle to be packed with shimmer. Read on to hear the ins and outs of her at-home business.
Us: Just to get started, how long have you been making your own polish?
Jeanine: 2 years
What’s your “day job”?
This is my day job and I love it!
How did you begin creating your own polishes?
I am actually a former licensed nail technician and when practicing, I would frequently create my own colors from blending other polishes together. When I stopped practicing as a nail tech, my love for nails and nail art didn’t end there. So it seemed like a natural progression for me. I’m passionate about natural nail care and my goal is to teach others about the proper care and maintenance of their own nails.

What makes your line of lacquers unique?
I use a 5-free base as a starting point, and you’ll always see a hint of shimmer or sparkle in all the polishes I make, whether glitter or solid. I try to create different glitter blends that will fit in with today’s fashion.
Do any of your polishes have a totally different look layered over a colored base?
Yes, Ice Queen. It has iridescent and holographic glitters in a clear base. It looks awesome on dark or light colored bases.

Is there a story behind your brand’s name?
My family and friends all know that I’ve always been a crafty person. I can usually look at something and say, “Oh wow, I can DIY that.” So when choosing a name, Krafty Gurl seemed appropriate. I just played around with the spelling a bit, to make it fun. However, Krafty Gurl is more of the “alter ego” sort of like an “aka”. The actual brand name of the polish is Nail Dazzle.
What’s the inspiration behind your lacquer colors?
Just about everything. I do check the Pantone color and fashion reports and those color combos do inspire a great deal of my line. However, nature, smells, tastes, places, people all inspire and have inspired polishes in my line.
What is your best seller right now?
It would definitely be a toss up between my Gloss It Top Coat which is also 5-free and my spring Glass Garden Collection.
What is your favorite polish you’ve ever created?
That’s another toss up. That would have to be both Black Tie Affair, because of its versatility, and also It’s a Fiesta as it is the most colorful glitter topper I have on the line.
Other than your own, what’s your favorite brand of polish to use?
I am an indie polish fan myself and use Pure Nail Lacquers, Cult Nails mostly. Some mainstreams would be Bettina (Puerto Rico) and Zoya.
Any spoilers you’d like to share about your future collections?
I have quite a few future products in testing mode at the moment. But I can say neons, more solids, plus nail and hand care.
