We got to chat one-on-one with Jessica of Jonesy Lou Lacquer. Check out what goes into the making of her polish, and what makes this such a uniquely urban brand!

Nail It!: How long have you been making your own polish?
Jessica: I’ve been creating polishes for about a year and a half. Jonesy Lou Lacquer was founded in September 2013.

What’s your “day job”?
Although I wish I could spend all day creating polish, (who wouldn’t want to spend all day around glitter?) I do have a day job. I am currently a coordinator for a hospital in Los Angeles.

How did you begin creating your own polishes?
My fiancé gave me a DIY polish kit for my birthday. I was already addicted to nail polish but that kit took my addiction to the next level! I knew I really wanted to start my own line when the polishes I created looked like the inspiration behind it.

What makes your line of lacquers unique?
I really keep my customers in mind when I create a polish. I don’t produce anything that I wouldn’t wear myself. I love to create seasonal polishes that can be worn year round. I also have a fascination with black jelly polishes. These are my favorite to wear and create!

Is there a story behind your brand’s name?
The name I originally wanted to use was in use by another brand. I thought about it and decided to use the nickname for my fiancé. I call him Jones because of the Amy Winehouse song, “Me and Mr. Jones.” He calls me Lou (I still can’t figure out why). That’s how Jonesy Lou Lacquer was born!

What’s the inspiration behind your lacquer colors?
I find inspiration in a lot of things, whether it be art, nature, music, or the city. I love hanging out in Los Angeles, because there is so much to take in! Currently, I find myself mostly inspired by music. I love Amy Winehouse, hip-hop, and indie music. Amy was the inspiration for my debut collection and I have two collections inspired by hip hop. My Shaolin Collection was inspired by The Wu Tang Clan and my Legends Collection was inspired by The Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Nas, and Dr. Dre.

What is your best seller right now?
I would say that my best sellers are Time Traveler, Spittin’ Shade and Sugar Venom.

What is your favorite polish you’ve ever created?
I love Time Traveler! My favorite polishes are black jellies and Time Traveler was a happy accident. The finished result reminded me of the galaxy and was what inspired me to create the Through Time & Space Collection.

Other than your own, what’s your favorite brand of polish to use?
I love Sinful Colors and Color Club polishes. Color Club has to die for holos and Sinful Colors is an awesome brand that is kind to your wallet.

What’s one tip you wished you knew when you started your own indie line?
Patience and planning ahead is the key! While some brands may become an overnight sensation, it can take a while for your business to gain momentum. Don’t get discouraged!
