Did you know that each set of Ethereal Lacquer is based on a story?
Raved about everywhere by polish fanatics, Ethereal Lacquer is without a doubt a favorite in the nail community. We were actually pretty surprised to learn that the brand’s creator, Meagan Whitlock, only opened her shop in May of 2013 – that’s crazy fast success! Read more about her in our Q&A below!
How long have you been making your own polish?
I started experimenting in December 2012 and opened up my store in May of 2013! So about six months!
How did you begin creating your own polishes?
For as long as I can remember, I would mix store bought polishes to make my own colors. I [was] always curious [about making my own polishes]. Once I found out about indies, I knew it was where I wanted to be! I researched, invested, and experimented for months until I was ready to open my store.
What makes your line of lacquers unique?
Before a collection of polishes is made, my husband Nate and I create a story. I then develop polishes to match our fictional world. In a way, each polish tells a story, each color has its own world in which it belongs. We have a really great time creating these fictional places and I hope to someday share them with everyone.
Is there a story behind your brand’s name?
When I was young, my grandmother Rose would take me to pick flowers every week during the summer. One day, the entire meadow was full of dandelions. We made so many wishes. That day was heavenly and I wanted to find a word to describe that memory. Ethereal means, “extremely delicate and light in a way that seems too perfect for this world.”
What’s the inspiration behind your lacquer colors?
My biggest inspiration is the woods. I enjoy the wealth of color in nature. To me there is a story behind every tree branch and every budding flower; I just want to tell it with polish!
What is your best seller right now?
Currently my best seller is Spectral. This beautiful multichrome super holographic shifts between blue, red, copper, amber, purple and even a bit of orange! This polish is from the Holiday Spirit collection.
What is your favorite polish you’ve ever created?
This is tough to answer because it always changes. At the moment, my favorite is Wychwood (pictured on previous page). I am really loving vampy colors right now. I see myself wearing this through the holidays. The purple shimmers in the oxblood base really make it unique from the rest of my stash.
Other than your own, what’s your favorite brand of polish to use?
Chanel. I love their formulas and their colors are always classic and timeless. I know if I can’t decide on a color I can reach for my Chanel Black Satin and love it every time.
Do any of your polishes have a totally different look layered over a colored base?
There are several polishes that look different on various colors. A fan favorite is Absinthe, which can be layered over any color to give it a really beautiful emerald “glow.” I recommend that it be worn over darker or bolder colors for a dramatic effect. Another polish with equal versatility is Veiled. This beautiful holographic top coat has a flash of purple shimmer. Over black you really see the purple come to life, but I have seen this layered over nudes, neons and just about everything in between and it is always beautiful.
Any spoilers you’d like to share about your future collections?
Recently, I have been inspired by the various metals that you see in steampunk! I am working on some new techniques to give your nails an industrial look. Ok, I have said too much, you will have to wait and see!
