Meet Melody Mandegar, creator of Envy Lacquer! We talked to her one on one to know her business (and her gorgeous polishes) a little better!
How long have you been making your own polish?
I started out research and testing in November of 2014. I launched my first collection in May of 2015.
What’s your “day job”?
I currently am working at a real estate office as a transactions coordinator but since diving into the indie polish community I am seeking a job in social media. I love learning the dynamics of it as well as seeing the inner workings of the communities that are created because of it.
How did you begin creating your own polishes?
I was watching one of my favorite Youtube vloggers Bunny Meyers aka @Grav3yardgirl and I was inspired to do something creative with my makeup background. The only issue was that I hate being on camera. That of course took me out of the Youtube platform. I thought I could become a swatcher! When I started looking at accounts I noticed brands I had never heard of. I researched them and learned that they were making their own polish. I couldn’t wait to start doing it myself and it’s been an awesome journey so far.
What makes your line of lacquers unique?
I make what comes from my heart. I don’t really have a style or a look I try to achieve. After my second collection I realized what I enjoy making is based on the visions I have in my head as opposed to trying to figure out how to make what’s a popular style on the market.
Do any of your polishes have a totally different look layered over a colored base?
Shattered Rainbow is a topper I am in love with.
Is there a story behind your brand’s name?
There really isn’t a story. I was trying to incorporate “everlasting” because it’s the translation of my last name but I was worried that people might think it’s a gel polish! Envy came to me because I wanted a name that was short and sweet but not so innocent.
What’s the inspiration behind your lacquer colors?
I have had collections go both ways. I have made a series of colors and fit them into a theme like my Sugar Skull Collection. But I have also had some character themes that fans have asked me for and I have made polishes based off of that too. I think inspiration can come from many places. Sometimes you’re just in a certain mood and you feel like creating and you go with it. I think the most inspired polishes have been created from suggestions from my girls in my fan group on Facebook called “Envy’s Entourage.”
What is your best seller right now?
That is most definitely Pisces at Heart!
What is your favorite polish you’ve ever created?
NYNE, hands down!
Other than your own, what’s your favorite brand of polish to use?
I am a mainstream junkie OPI, Essie and China Glaze. Mostly because I haven’t had too much exposure to indie brands but I am finding amazing brands out there every day.
What’s one tip you wished you knew when you started your own indie line?
Glitter and shimmer get everywhere and you shouldn’t expect it to go away from every crevice of your home. Ever.
Any spoilers you’d like to share about your future collection?
I have a trio planned for my 30th Birthday that I am super excited about!
