Indie Polish Spotlight: Emily de Molly

Indie Polish Spotlight: Emily de Molly

By semick

For pretty shimmers and holos, make your way over to Emily de Molly! Owner Hayley Fulham opened the shop a respectable three years ago (May 2012), so she knows her way around the indie industry. We talked to her one on one to get her scoop on being a polish creator.

Nail It!: So…What’s your “day job”?
Hayley Fulham: I juggle my days running Emily de Molly full-time and looking after my beautiful 15-month old.

How did you begin creating your own polishes?
I originally started creating my own polish as a way to expand my personal collection. After posting on Instagram, I realized there was a demand in the nail community for the colors I was creating.

Fancy Sauce

Do any of your polishes have a totally different look layered over a colored base?
Yes! Fancy Sauce is one of my favorites and can give a completely different look depending on how you wear it. It was originally designed to be worn over a base color but I have seen some swatches of it by itself and it is gorgeous!

What’s the inspiration behind your lacquer colors?
I don’t often use anything as my inspiration. Occasionally I will use a photograph or a color scheme that has caught my attention but most of the time, I will just decide I want to make a particular color to fill a gap in my range and just see where that takes me.

What is your best seller right now?
My current best seller is Ambitious Flower, followed closely by Stockpile and Copper Patina.

Learned Doctors

What is your favorite polish you’ve ever created?
Oh my goodness, just one? I guess my current favorite would be Learned Doctors but seriously, this changes every week. Last week it was Vivid Dreams.

Other than your own, what’s your favorite brand of polish to use?
That’s a hard one! I adore a lot of the local talent we have right here in Australia and my favorite would have to be Femme Fatale Cosmetics. I also really love Pretty Serious, Celestial Cosmetics and Indigo Bananas.

What’s one tip you wished you knew when you started your own indie line?
Honestly, I don’t think there is anything I would have done differently. Creating polish is like any other job, it’s a learning curve and the best way to learn is to do it yourself. If that means making the occasional minor mistake, then so be it!

Any spoilers you’d like to share about your future collections?
You are going to see a lot of holos in the coming collections!
