Indie Polish Spotlight: Darling Diva

Indie Polish Spotlight: Darling Diva

By Fefe

Carrie Jenkins’ craving for indie polish was so strong that she decided to start Darling Diva Polish. Read our interview with this polish maker to get the inside scoop on the shimmering, colorful lacquers we love!

Darling Diva The Queens

Nail It!: How long have you been making your own polish?
Carrie Jenkins: I started around November 2011, mostly for myself at the time.  As I made polishes I would share them on various online forums and people really took to them.

How did you begin creating your own polishes?
The whole indie scene started and I couldn’t get my hands on the polishes I wanted. The few indies at the time would stock shop and sell out within minutes! That’s CRAZY! I just wasn’t fast enough to snag anything so I took to making my own polishes.

Darling Diva

What makes your line of lacquers unique?
It’s so hard to be unique today with over 500 indies on the scene. Everyone gets their glitters and pigments from the same places, we are bound to create polishes that look similar. I try to find unique pigments/glitters/effects from little known sources. It takes a lot of research; luckily that is a big part of my day job so I know how to do that, but it’s still a struggle.

Is there a story behind your brand’s name?
Yes:)  It’s drawn directly from my 4 year old niece Zoey Jane.  She is the ODD (original darling diva!).  She is girly, sarcastic, naughty (as a 4 year old should be!), and adorable.

Darling Diva Back In Black

What’s the inspiration behind your lacquer colors?
I make what I like to wear. First and foremost, if I don’t like it, it will never hit the shop. I like girly girl colors like pink/red/purple, and I also like being somewhat edgy with colors using black (the Back in Black collection is awesome!) or blue/green.  I want to look down at my nails and go “oooooooh” every time.

Darling Diva Rose Diamond

What is your best seller right now?
Right now it would have to be Rose Diamond.  To me, its perfection.

Diva Polish Bitchcraft

What is your favorite polish you’ve ever created?
It’s so hard to pull out a favorite.  It is like picking your favorite child.  I guess it would be Bitchcraft.  I am a huge American Horror Story: Coven fan and my Bitchcraft came out before the first episode, but the name came from the title of the first episode.  My Bitchcraft is a linear charcoal holographic polish with blue to red color changing glitters. Its sister polish is OMG BFD and that is a charcoal linear holo with green to purple color shifting glitters.

Darling Diva Bitchcraft

Other than your own, what’s your favorite brand of polish to use?
Oh boy there are so many. Elevation Polish, CrowsToes, Northern Star, I could go on and on there are so many good ones.

Darling Diva Ringer

Do any of your polishes have a totally different look layered over a colored base?
Ringer is a lovely polish that can take on many different looks depending on the base color.  Most of the glitter toppers can change depending on the base color.  Most people put a lovely neon glitter bomb over white and its totally gorgeous but once in a while try it over navy or black, its STUNNING!

Any spoilers you’d like to share about your future collections?
I have a collection coming out based on muscle cars. I love fast fast cars; I had an 89 Mustang GT Convertible and it was my absolute dream car. One day I will have another!  I also have a Valentine’s Day collection coming out that is all linear holos and color shifting flakies based on the 7 (or so) must haves for the perfect relationship/marriage.  I think they are truly stunning!
