How to Create Our “Minimal” Portofino Chic Nail Art!

03.26.13

By semick

No matter if you like a little bit of nail art or a lot, we have you covered with our “Less + More” column in every issue of Nail It!. For the March/April 2013 issue, we tasked A-list manicurist Pattie Yankee (who paints Katy Perry’s digits, natch!) with creating both subtle and all-out nail art designs based on this “Portofino Chic” Temperley London dress from the spring 2013 runway. Follow these step-by-steps for her “Minimal” take on this fashion nailspiration!

See Yankee’s step-by-steps for her “Maximal” twist on this look here!

  • Step 1

File the nail to a long almond shape. Polish it with two coats of a chalk-white polish. Try: Essie Nail Polish in Blanc.

    SLIDE 1 OF 5
  • Step 2

Using a striper brush and bright blue nail polish, draw a curved “v” at the moon. Try: Revlon Top Speed Nail Enamel in Superstitious.

    SLIDE 2 OF 5
  • Step 3

Using a striper brush and warm yellow nail polish, trace inside of the blue “v.” Try: Pop Beauty Nail Glam Nail Polish in Sunny.

    SLIDE 3 OF 5
  • Step 4

Using a dotting tool and the same bright blue, create a row of dots that follows the outside of the blue “v.” Swirl one of row of dots into a curve.

    SLIDE 4 OF 5
  • Step 5

Finish by dotting four red dots within the yellow “v.” Wait to dry and then top coat the entire nail.
