Designer Rebecca Minkoff isn’t one to shy away from a little nail art on her runway. Season after season, the manicures that hit her catwalk go on to top beauty lists near and far. With so many eager eyes focused on what will be happening on tips backstage at Minkoff, it makes perfect sense that Essie lead manicurist Michelle Saunders put the decision-making in your hands for Spring 2016. That is: She crafted three designs prior to the show and let Minkoff and Essie fans pick the final show look in a social media competition. The winner: Lucite Sunset, a design inspired by chunky Lucite heels found in Minkoff’s collection.
To craft the ombré look, Saunders overlaps Tarte Deco, Marshmallow, Beach Bum Blu and Midnight Cami onto a makeup sponge that she then rolls and stamps onto the nail. “The more pressure you put on the sponge, the more pigment you’ll have down,” she explains. To finish, she paints on a layer of Spaghetti Strap over the entire nail followed by Gel Setter Top Coat. “Spaghetti Strap is a really beautiful color because it softens everything and gives [the design] a sense of a sunset haze,” she says. –Molly Church
