Meet Cristine Rote! Chances are you’ve seen her work (@simplynailogical), her nail memes (@simplynotlogical), or her cat (@menchiethecat) somewhere on the Internet before. In a world full of nail bloggers, she stands out as a hilarious, ridiculous, highly entertaining beacon of holo polish light. We talked to her a little to get to know the lady behind the nails…
Nail It!: What got you into nail art?
Rote: My obsession for all things colourful and shiny! In high school, I used to paint each of my nails a different colour and then add a stripe of another different colour down the middle. Back then, around 2004, (yes, I’m old) nail art was considered really tacky and I wasn’t aware of online nail art communities so I was a nail painting deviant.
How long have you been writing on your blog?
I only started my blog about a year and a half ago, around March 2014! Before then I had no idea there was an online community for nail art (what’s wrong with me?!), despite having painted weird things on my nails for a decade.
Tell us about the first bottle of nail polish you remember having.
I vividly remember buying the entire collection of Sally Hansen Prisms from the drug store when I was 15 years old. They were the pearlescent origin of all the multi-chromes we know today!
What sort of things will readers find on your social media accounts?
Lots of fun nail designs, but also some entertainment! I like to have a good time on my accounts, whether my blog, YouTube, or Instagram. I also run a feature account on Instagram (@simplynotlogical) where I feature other talented nail artists’ tutorials, along with nail-related memes or other humorous posts because we all gotta take a few seconds out of the day and laugh sometimes
What’s your favorite nail art you’ve done? What inspired you to try it?
The scaled gradient! It’s basically overlapping gradients that go in the same direction, which is not the same as a reciprocal/reverse gradient. Words don’t make sense to me either, but this pic might:
That’s the very first scaled gradient I ever did! Here’s the whole blog post.
I’ve always been drawn to the beautiful geometry that multiple gradients can produce. So I was playing around with how I could make gradients fade in different directions at the same time, and then this came out of my brain. I’ve done a lot of them since, these are some other faves using the same technique!:
What is your “day job?” What do you do outside your blog?
Perhaps the polar opposite of doing nail art – I work full time at a desk as a crime and health statistics analyst! Between that and making nail art videos, I pretty much have no time to do anything else, but I’m at peace with it because my job is what I spent seven years in school for and doing my nails is a hobby I love!
How do you juggle nails and other aspects of your life? Do you have a routine?
Eat. Nails. Work. Nails. Sleep. Repeat. Honestly, I don’t really balance nails and other aspects of my life. I have a problem. My friends and family think I live in a cave, and my boyfriend is currently glaring at me from the couch.
What’s one “secret” to a successful blog you can share?
Be yourself! I think the blogging market has gotten somewhat saturated with box-cut “beauty guru” type nail accounts, and the problem now is that there’s just too many of them. The same thing happened on the makeup scene. So, the best way to stand out and set yourself apart from the others is to not be afraid to be yourself and if that means taking a chance on trying out weird, strange or out-of-the-box ideas, then go for it! Why be like someone else, they’re already taken.
What is your absolute favorite color of polish?
Holo. Oh that’s not a colour is it… probably teal holo, blue holo, purple holo, or black holo… rainbow!!!
What’s the most surprising thing that has happened since you started your blog?
Sometimes I get so distracted by holo glitter that I forgot where I am or what I’m doing. One time after work I picked up some nail mail from the post office near my house, walked home, stared at all the holo, did my nails, and went to bed. The next morning I went to my parking spot to drive my car to work and it was gone. I freaked out and called the cops to report it stolen. I had already filed the police report when I realized later in the morning that the day before I had driven my car from work to the post office, parked it there, then walked home with the nail mail. I didn’t explain that holo glitter distraction to the cops, though. I don’t think they would have understood. But now all the polish addicts out there can be entertained by my stupidity.
What else would you be doing if you didn’t have the blog?
Probably some other hobby, something artistic, photography, video making of some sort, who knows! I’m usually obsessively involved in something in my free time, before nails it was writing my thesis.
Do you have any collaboration polishes coming out you can tell us about?
Yes I do!!! My kitty Menchie demanded that my first collab polish be all about her, so we came up with “Menchie the Cat”, and she’s jam-packed with baby pink holographic glitters that represent her super pink nose and sparkly eyes when she sees holo! It just came out from Starrily and you can find it here: livelovepolish.com/menchies-favorite-nail-polish.
