Sheila, creator of nail blog, Pointless Café began as a real artist of real paintings – and has just transferred her skills to nails! Get to know her better in our talk with her below.
Us: How long have you been writing on your blog?
Sheila: I started my blog in March of 2011 without a thought in my head of nail polish. I had lost my husband a couple of years before and I think writing was just a way of coping. I’ve always loved writing. So the first about 5 months was just me, rambling, telling funny stories. After that, the polish took over and I haven’t looked back. I still write about other things from time to time and once a week I do a Bits and Bobs post that can be about anything, including some makeup reviews or the last stupid thing I did or just photos of my dogs.
What got you into nail art?
I’m actually an artist (acrylics on canvas mostly) but the transfer is much more difficult than I anticipated. Nails are so much tinier than a big canvas, but I keep trying!
What is your absolute favorite color of polish?
It’s always been a violet shade much like orchid, Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2014. It’s about time that gorgeous shade got some love! But I won’t kick anything taupe or grey to the curb either.
How many different polishes do you own?
How many different polishes are made? Well, I have all of those except crackle. I never got into that one at all. As far as the count? I think we all know I’m in denial about that and I think it’s better that way.
Which celebrity’s nails would you jump at the chance to design? What would you put on her nails?
I have a total girl crush on Emma Thompson but she rarely wears polish, so I’d have to pick Karen Gillan. Her nails are always impeccable. I’d probably do a simple gradient and just let her beautiful nails shine.
What’s your favorite nail art you’ve done? What inspired you to try it?
I think my Japanese Tree Mani is my favorite so far. I was a part of a group of bloggers who were doing one theme week per month and that week’s theme was Japanese-inspired. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have had the courage to try it. I also was quite pleased with my Geisha Nails for that same week. Other favorites include my freehand argyle nails for Christmas, although they can be done with any color combo, my butterfly wing nails and my autumn toothpick marble.
What’s your favorite nail trend?
I think the “natural nail” trend is the best. I’ve never liked fake nails and I’m happy women are embracing natural, whether they be short or long. The simple gradient is my favorite “nail art.”
What’s your favorite beauty trend?
The emphasis on a well-groomed, more natural brow is my favorite. I am old enough to have lived through some awful brow trends! As far as fashion? I’m thrilled to see houndstooth making a comeback!
Besides polish, what is your favorite beauty product?
Mascara! I’m a redhead so without mascara, I basically have no eyes.
When did you realize your blog was a success?
Well, I’m not sure I’ve come to that realization yet. I think that’s what keeps me striving for improvement. Obviously it’s much more popular than ever before and I’m so grateful for that! But I’ll always keep trying to improve.
What is the best part of being in the business of beauty?
I get to keep learning! Confession: I never really learned how to apply makeup properly. So being around all the wonderful beauty bloggers has helped me tremendously.
What was your most recent impulse buy?
I just bought two new Chanel lipsticks as a pick-me-up/replacement for one that was in my purse when it, along with my car, was stolen out of my garage last week. I couldn’t replace the car or purse right now, but buying those lipsticks was an impulse that satisfied my “grabby hands” and boosted my confidence. Funny how a lipstick can do that!
Are you close with other bloggers in the community?
Yes, I’ve made some wonderful friends in the blogging community! It’s nice to be able to exchange ideas – what works, what doesn’t, etc. I’ve learned so much from them. And they understand the problem of drowning in polish!
How do you juggle nails and other aspects of your life? Do you have a routine?
I basically just fly by the seat of my pants. When I have time, I blog. A lot. And when I don’t have much time, I usually have a bunch of things “in the vault” I can pull out. I can’t just sit and do nothing, so if I’m watching TV or working on the computer, I’m usually swatching or cropping photos. I have to be doing a minimum of two things at all times unless I’m with my sweetie. Then he gets my undivided attention.
What else would you be doing if you didn’t have the blog?
I’m sure I’d be writing about something, or painting more. And I’d probably have more than two dogs. I’d love to be able to rescue more.
What is your favorite beauty tool?
Well, it’s not what I would call a “beauty tool,” but there’s nothing else that makes me feel more beautiful and confident than a great bag. Even if I’m having a “bad everything day,” I always feel better and step a little higher carrying a great purse.
