Bloggers You Should Know: Narmai of PiggieLuv

By semick

Meet Narmai Nan, blogger and creative mind behind and @narmai! We asked her a few questions one-on-one…and here’s what happened.

Us: What got you into nail art?
Narmai Nan: I was still in college, and we were doing an assignment for a local theme park. My nail polish obsession was just in its starting phase so I had about 20 polishes, but 2 of those matched the colors of the theme park’s logo and I thought hey, why not paint the logo on my thumbs? The client loved it and so my love for nail art was born (of course I had no idea that it was called “nail art” yet).

How long have you been writing on your blog?
Since May 2012, so coming up on 4 years now!

I have this little plastic pig figurine that I got years ago from someone who has gotten me through some tough times. I call it PiggieLuv because the pig has hearts on its back (it’s the exact same pig as in my logo!) and since nails sometimes get called piggies, it seemed perfect as a blog name!

How many different polishes do you own?
I don’t know how many exactly… I don’t have a lot of space to store polish so I have to keep my stash in check a bit, which is really hard! Still, I have a great range of colors and finishes and some amazing brands that I love with all of my heart, so I’m good!  🙂

It’s okay, we’re polish-obsessed too. What was the very first nail polish you ever remember having?
My very first polish was probably the water-soluble kind by Barbie. It was red. And I hate red. I remember as a kid I’d put tiny little stickers on my nails and seal them with transparent polish. They’d still come off in a heartbeat but I didn’t care, I loved it!

What sort of things will readers find on your blog?
Detailed designs. Crazy ideas. Things you’d never wear but still love to look at 😉

How do you juggle nails and other aspects of your life? Do you have a routine?
Sometimes a design will get stretched over two or three days. Stuff comes up while painting, it happens. I slap on a top coat and continue whenever I can!

What else would you be doing if you didn’t have the blog?
I have no idea! It all developed so naturally over the course of a few years, it has become such a big part of me that I just wouldn’t know.

What’s one secret to a successful blog you can share?
Find your own style! There’s lots of other people already and there’s no use copying what’s already out there. Just be yourself and find your “groove.”

What is your absolute favorite color of polish?
I can’t pick just one! Halp! Mostly I like certain color combos, adding a second color can really boost the first. I love pink and green together. It’s a totally unexpected combo but it just makes me feel so happy!

Okay, since it’s awards show season, which celebrity’s nails would you jump at the chance to design?
Lady Gaga!

What would you put on her nails?
She’d let me do all the crazy stuff and actually wear it too!

What’s your favorite nail trend?
I love that actual lights are making their way onto nails. That’s just SO my style, I hope to see new developments in the future!

What’s the most surprising thing that has happened since you started your blog?
I’ve always been insecure about the things I make. But nail art is something I feel so strongly about, I’ll show it to anyone and I’ve never gotten a bad response to it! But the most surprising thing is when men take a liking to my nail art, even follow my social media, and one time my podiatrist saw my tiny little paintings and he had an extra UV lamp that he just gave to me!

That’s amazing! So, we gotta know…what’s your favorite base and top coat to use?
My very favorite base coat is a peel off base coat. I switch polish so often that the peel off base coat really saves me a lot of time and hassle, plus I get to keep my designs! I can peel them off in one piece and keep them in a little box.

I love how people bond over nails. Are you close with other bloggers or indies in the community?
I’ve found a couple of ladies (and even men!) who I really click with. I talk to a lot of people every day, from all over the world. Some have become really close friends even, which is amazing to me!

Have any nail art tips to leave us with?
Try doing the things you think are way over your head, and if it fails, try again. You can probably do a lot more than you think!
