Melissa Collado, or as she is sometimes called, The Tape Queen (aka @melcisme), is a self-taught nail artist who just loves playing with clean-line designs. Check out what she had to say to Nail It! about how she started out and what it’s like to run a successful Instagram account.
Us: What got you into nail art?
Melissa: After spending a lot of money in nail salons on mediocre nail art that I was never satisfied with I decided to try it out myself. I started watching YouTube tutorials to get the basics down pat, and shortly after I starting trying out some techniques. I instantly became addicted to teaching myself how to achieve beautiful DIY nail art.
Tell us about either the first bottle of nail polish or first manicure/nail art you remember having.
My first attempt at nail art was a lady bug design. The design itself did not come out too bad but I had more polish on my cuticles then I did on my nails and the photo quality was awful. It is the first picture that I posted on Instagram and I will never take it down because it is a reminder of how far I have come.
What sort of things will readers find on your blog?
My Instagram account is full of nail art, especially tape designs – those are my specialty. I post some pictorials and tutorials as well. There are also some tidbits of my life thrown in because I am more than a set of nails.
What’s one of your favorite posts?
A post where I was “tagged” to show my favorite accent nails of all time. While putting this collage together I realized that I have done a lot of designs that I am really proud of.
What’s your favorite nail art you’ve done? What inspired you to try it?
I honestly have created so many new tape designs and it is hard to pick just one. I am actually being referred to as the “tape queen”.
What is your “day job?” What do you do outside managing your Instagam?
I have a full time job in New York City. I am a Business Analyst.
How do you juggle nails and other aspects of your life? Do you have a routine?
I usually polish my nails every day or every other day. Once I get home from work and get settled in my brain starts flooding with ideas for nail art. If I don’t polish them that night then I usually spend the night thinking about what I am going to polish on them.
What is your absolute favorite color of polish?
The original China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy which is no longer available.
How many different polishes do you own?
What’s your favorite nail trend?
Striping tape designs. Nothing beats those clean lines.
What’s the most surprising thing that has happened since you started your Instagram?
All of the amazingly talented people that I have met and become friends with.
Are you close with other bloggers or indies in the community? Who? Do you partner up on anything?
Yes. I have grown so close to so many nail art addicts and bloggers on Instagram. We often collaborate on things like “ Mani Swaps” where we copy each other mani’s or “Bestie Twin Nails” where both would create the same exact nail design.
What else would you be doing if you didn’t have Instagram?
I would probably have a blog.
Have any nail art tips?
Practice, patience and good clean up is very important.
