Bloggers You Should Know: Judy Rusk

By Elma

Meet Judy Rusk, the blogger behind

How did you get into nails?
It’s been my ultimate accessory for years! I’ve been doing my nails since I was in elementary school, when my mom made me do my nails at the kitchen table on top of a paper towel in case I spilled the bottle! I’ve always had a bit of a polish collection problem, but when I started BeautyJudy four years ago, I started reading a couple nail blogs, and that added fuel to my nail loving fire. Not only did I start painting my nails more frequently, that’s when I truly started experimenting with nail art.

What is your favorite color of polish?
That’s hard – I imagine if I had kids that’d be like choosing which one I liked best, haha. I can tell you that I love duochrome nail polish. I love multichromal nail polish. Actually, my wedding colors are inspired by Cult Nails Flushed – a deep purple with strong pink shimmer! So that would probably be one of my favorites!

Which celebrity’s nails would you jump at the chance to do?
Zooey Deschanel. She always has classy, statement nail art. Like her tuxedo nails from a year or so ago. Nothing too over the top, but a statement, and on trend. I think the nail art I do for myself on a regular basis would be a good fit!

What’s your favorite nail trend?
I have finally gotten on board with nail shape experimentation, and I switched from years of square nails to almost an almond shape at the start of this year. Also, I love to do nail art of all kinds, but I find myself gravitating a lot towards a glitter or nail art accent nail. For example, I’ll do my whole mani in one color, and then pick a complementing glitter for my ring finger. Oh! I’m also in love with foil nail art!

What is your favorite current beauty trend?
All winter I’ve been wearing bold, bright lips. Hot pink – either matte or glossy. I love lippies as much as I love nail polish, so this is my favorite trend!

Favorite beauty product?
Can I offer two?! Cuticle oil is a must for me, I use it a lot to help my nails stay hydrated and always look camera-ready! And I absolutely love Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment with SPF 15 – almost all the colors. They feel like butter on my lips in the best possible way.

What is the biggest beauty or nail mistake that you are seeing right now?
My biggest beauty pet peeve right now is duck nails, but thankfully, that seems to be dying down.  *shudder*

Do you have any other hobbies that you want to share?
I’m an avid reader; my favorite is memoir but I’ll read everything from genre fiction to nonfiction! Also, right now I’m busy wedding planning!

What is the most outrageous nail design that you created?
It wasn’t very practical, and it wasn’t outrageously hard to do, but I did a manicure in honor of this last season’s premiere of Dexter that made me laugh, and still makes me laugh to look at it!

Do you have a favorite musician?  What design would you like to put on their nails?
I love music, but I don’t know if I have a specific favorite. I love the music of most of my favorites from a specific time period in their career; like Madonna, Mariah Carey and Barry Manilow (oh yes, I’m a closet Fanilow!!). I guess maybe I’d love to do Mariah’s nails. I would go all bling and glamour on her nails. Maybe a trend-appropriate neutral with lots of different-sized rhinestones!

What are your trend predictions for 2013?
In nails, we’ll see gritty-texture polishes take off this year! OPI’s Liquid Sand kicked off the trend, followed by Zoya’s Pixie Dust and I’ve heard that there’s another coming from China Glaze, as well. This means other brands aren’t far behind, making this a trend that will last well into the year! Holographic and funky glitter polishes will also continue to be popular. Also, foil is going to become very popular for nail art.

One trend I have on my wish list, though? A polish or collection release like OPI Black Spotted or the Layla Bubbly Effect line; Black Spotted had a limited release outside the U.S. and the Layla line is marketed outside U.S. I hope someone introduces this in the U.S.!

Another trend I see heating up for early this year is the bright lip and matte lip trend I’ve been enjoying this season! It seems like hot pink lips are the new red.
