Every mom needs her manis! Francine Brandow began blogging about her nail designs and insatiable passion for glitter two years ago as a side job to her role as a mom, having no idea where it would lead her. Now armed with hundreds of bottles of nail polish and thousands of followers on Instagram and her blog, The Polished Mommy has made her own niche in the nail art community! Read through our Q&A with Francine to find out how it all happened.
Nail It!: What got you into nail art?
Francine: I’ve always loved art. I actually double majored in Art History and Arts and Humanities in college, and I like doing things that are creative. After the birth of my second son, I suffered from PPD and needed to find something that allowed me to have some “me” time in order to de-stress. I happened upon the Nail Board on Makeupalley and fell in love with all of the different colors and finishes of polish. I soon began following tons of nail blogs and after a month or two decided to start doing my own nails. As I got better at doing my nails I started doing more nail art rather than just manicures and the rest is history!
What is your absolute favorite color of polish?
I am so in love with multichromes, like ILNP Cygnus Loop. The fact the one polish can be so many different colors just by the angle you look at it, amazes me.
How many different polishes do you own?
I just recently went through my stash and purged A LOT of polishes that I just wasn’t into anymore. I’m not really sure what the exact number is, but if I had to guess, I’d say somewhere around 700? (Sadly, it’s probably more than that.)
Which celebrity’s nails would you jump at the chance to design?
I’d have to say Katy Perry. Her nails are always fabulous and she rocks so many fun designs!
What’s your favorite nail art you’ve done?
My favorite would have to be this butterfly wing design. I loved how the base color came out, and was so happy with the wing design that I submitted it to the Bundle Monster Create Your Own Stamping Plate contest (and won!).
What’s your favorite nail trend?
Textured polish! I’m really liking textured polish, like Zoya PixieDust or Julie G Gumdrops, right now. I love how they sparkle, and they make the perfect accent nail polish.
What’s your favorite beauty trend?
Bright hair color!!! I recently dyed my hair magenta and I don’t think I can go back to “normal” color again. I just love how bright and fun the color is.
Besides polish, what is your favorite beauty product?
Brushes. I not only have many for my nail art, I also have a decent sized collection of makeup brushes. Most recently I updated my brushes to Real Techniques and I just can’t seem to stop buying more; they’re so fabulous.
When did you realize your blog was a success?
When I was contacted by Beautylish to do an article on a polish I made using Chromaflair [a car pigment]. It was the first time anyone contacted me about what I do. It’s funny, though, the article wound up being very controversial because no one had used Chromaflair for polish before, even though Spectraflair was very popular, and people thought it was so dangerous.
How long have you been writing on your blog?
A little under 2 years. It’s crazy, I never could have imagined that in such a short amount of time I would be where I am today.
What was your most recent impulse buy?
That would have to be the Dance Legend Chameleon collection. I saw swatches of them and had to have them, except they are currently only available direct from Dance Legend, which is in Russia. After 2 months of waiting to get them, they just arrived!
Do you work in fashion outside of your blog?
I am first and foremost a stay at home mom. My day is very boring, I drop my son off at preschool, go to the gym, then run errands. I live in leggings and comfy shirts, does that count as fashion? Haha.
What else would you be doing if you didn’t have the blog?
My main focus is my kids, my blog is just a side project for me. I love doing it and don’t think there’s anything else I would rather do with my “mommy time” (aka nap time).
What is your favorite beauty tool?
My BeautyBlender, I love that thing! I’ve tried other sponges that claim to be like it but nothing compares. It applies powder or liquid foundation so well and leaves my skin smooth and flawless.
