Emily of The Lacquerologist makes nail art a science! This smart gal switched from a career in life science to pursuing her own creative passion. And we’re glad she did! She not only hosts regular new product giveaways and experiments with rhinestones and her striper brush, but also gives honest and detailed reviews of the latest polishes. We got to know this blogger-turned-certified nail tech a little better by asking her a few questions.
Us: What got you into nail art?
Emily: I was searching for a creative outlet when I was having a rough go emotionally, and somehow started polishing my nails more often. Searching for swatches lead me to polish blogs, which lead me to nail art. I remember when Nails and Noms, Let Them Have Polish and The Nailasaurus did the 31 Day Challenge in 2011…that’s when I got hooked and knew I had to try it for myself!
What is your absolute favorite color of polish?
On my own nails, I love to wear bold blues and greens, but I always encourage people to wear whatever makes them happy in that moment!
How many different polishes do you own?
I prefer to remain blissfully ignorant of the actual number, but it’s probably between 2k-3k!
Which celebrity’s nails would you jump at the chance to design? What would you put on his/her nails?
I’ve always said I’d love to do Michelle Obama’s nails! Depending on the event she was attending I’d probably keep it super classy on her. But remember when she wore neon yellow polish on her toes in Hawaii? She’s a trendsetter!
What’s your favorite nail art you’ve done? What inspired you to try it?
I really loved my Scottish Terrier & Tartan manicure! My mom has two Scotties, which is what inspired it, but since them I’ve worn the tartan print multiple times. I love when an idea really comes to life well!
What’s your favorite nail trend?
I really love that are few rules when it comes to nails. I know there are seasonal classics and trends that are fun to play with, but when it comes down to it, you can do whatever you want. Lately I’ve loved white manicures with a touch of nail art, no matter what time of year it is!
Besides polish, what is your favorite beauty product?
I’m obviously a polish junkie, but recently I’ve bought more lipsticks and stains.
How long have you been writing on your blog?
I started The Lacquerologist in January 2012, and I’ve been blogging daily ever since!
What is the best part of being in the business of beauty?
As a blogger, I love inspiring people to try something exciting and fun that will make them happy. As a nail technician, I love giving my clients something that makes them smile for days after I see them! Nail art is all about having fun, and I get to share that with people!
What do you do outside your blog?
I eat, sleep, and breathe polish basically 100% of the time. In my “real life” I am a nail technician and small business owner. My small, natural nails spa in Canton, OH opened in May 2013 and keeps me pretty busy!
Are you close with other bloggers in the community?
Yes! I think interacting with other beauty and the other nail bloggers are one of the best parts of blogging. I love bouncing ideas off of them and learning from them!
How do you juggle nails and other aspects of your life? Do you have a routine?
Since I’m self-employed, my schedule is very flexible. On days that I don’t have appointments at work, I’ll work on blog stuff for hours at a time and schedule posts ahead, so that on busier days, I don’t have to stress about it!
What else would you be doing if you didn’t have the blog?
Wait, what? There’s life outside of nail polish?! :-p
What is your favorite beauty tool?
I consider cuticle balms and oils a beauty tool! They are your number one tool in creating healthy and gorgeous nails and hands!
