Theres a reason why leopard print is forever in style. From animal-accent handbags to spotted coats , the iconic pattern evokes a sleek edge with an underlying fierceness that’s hard to ignore. At the 2016 GLAAD Media Awards, pop star Demi Lovato projected pure confidence as she debuted a chic taken on animal dressing: printed pants and matching nails. Lovato’s manicurist Sabella Snyder mirrored the gradient pattern on the pop star’s trousers with a subtle leopard ombré design that commanded attention. Here, Snyder shares her secrets for hand painting the ferocious print like a pro.

I wanted something that complemented Demi’s outfit but didn’t overwhelm her look.” – Sabella Snyder

Demi’s Leopard Ombré How-To

  1. Prep the nail. Apply two coats of cream polish and let them dry.
  2. Use a detail brush to paint imperfect black “C” shapes, dots and lines at the cuticle area.
  3. Continue painting the design, fading out the pattern as you reach the center of the nail. The leopard print should be concentrated in the cuticle area. Let the design dry, then finish with top coat.

Pro Tip:

“The key to creating a good animal print is to make each part of the pattern look different. Every animal has a unique fur pattern, so doing this makes the print seem more realistic.” – Snyder
