Nail Art Tutorial: The Sunburst Half Moon

05.15.14

By James

Our love of nail art is heating up with these romantic half moons. The trick to their corona effect? Sponging! Click to see how Lisa of The Polish Playground puts the look together.

  • What You Need:

    1. Spoiled by Wet n’ Wild Plastic Flamingo
    2. Gosh Hot Coral
    3. Sally Hansen I Pink I Can
    4. Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Top Coat
    5. French nail tip guide stickers
    6. Makeup sponge

  • Step 1:

Apply Spoiled by Wet n’ Wild Plastic Flamingo as your base color and then Sally Hansen Insta-Dri to help speed up the drying time.

  • Step 2:

After letting your base color dry completely, take some curved French nail tip stickers to use as guidelines for your half-moon shape. Apply them near the base of the nail.

  • Step 3:

Taking a piece of a makeup sponge, paint Gosh Hot Coral and Sally Hansen I Pink I Can on it.

  • Step 4:

Start sponging the colors on your nail, making sure to concentrate the color below the nail sticker you’re using as a guideline. Repeat this step until the gradient is opaque.

  • Step 5:

Peel off the nail sticker guideline immediately after. Clean up around the nail with a Q-tip dipped in nail polish remover.

  • Step 6:

After giving the nails enough time to dry, finish off with your choice of top coat. I’m using Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Top Coat.
