Nail Art Tutorial: Pastel Mosaic Nails

If you want to liven up your nails for spring, look no further than this fun pastel mosaic mani. Glam Style Nails by Carolina gives tips for doing the look; click through to see them!

  • For this manicure you will need:

    • White polish (base color) - Color Club French Tip
    •
Polishes for the mosaic. For this I've used 3 different greens and 1 orange. Here are the polishes:
+ China Glaze Sun Of A Peach
      OPI Here Today... Aragon Tomorrow
      Jessica Cosmetics Victorian Crush
      Jessica Cosmetics Lime Cooler
      China Glaze Fairy Dust
    • Striping tape
    • A very thin nail art liner brush
    • Small/cuticle scissors
    • Small brush
    • Nail polish remover
    • Top coat

  • Step 1:

Paint middle and ring finger with 2 coats of your white polish. Paint pinky with 3 coats of China Glaze Sun Of A Peach  and pointer finger with 2 coats of Jessica Cosmetics Lime Cooler. Before moving on to the next step, make sure the polish is COMPLETELY dry. This is important since we're working with striping tape.

  • Step 2:

Cut 2 pieces of striping tape and put half of each on both nails, each at the opposite angle.

    SLIDE 3 OF 12
  • Step 3:

Cut 6 more stripes for each nail. Place them diagonally following the first. Place 3 on either side of the first piece of striping tape.

    SLIDE 4 OF 12
  • Step 4:

Cut 4 more stripes for each nail. Then place them vertically. The first stripe has to be in the middle as the main reference for the other 3. You need to place them as straight as possible. Start at the beginning of the diagonal stripes, so you could get a better geometrical effect of the mosaic.

    SLIDE 5 OF 12
  • Step 5:

Start with the darker polish and fill 4 or 5 spaces (depends in each nail). You could do it randomly, just be aware not to put two of the same color close to each other as you will fill the others with the other polishes. As the spaces are so small, be sure that your nail polish is thin. Use a drop of nail polish remover or a special polish thinner in case is too thick. Otherwise, when you fill the spaces, you will need to use more polish to cover and when you take the striping tape off, it will peel up some of the nail polish.

    SLIDE 6 OF 12
  • Step 6:

With Jessica Cosmetics Victorian Crush, fill 2 to 4 spaces randomly. You could use as many colors as you want and fill them randomly. For this design, I chose just 4 colors.

    SLIDE 7 OF 12
  • Step 7:

Fill another 3 or 4 spaces with Jessica Cosmetics Lime Cooler

    SLIDE 8 OF 12
  • Step 8:

End by filling the empty spaces with China Glaze Sun Of A Peach. Be quick – don’t let polish get too dry before removing the striping tape!

    SLIDE 9 OF 12
  • Step 9:

Carefully take off all the stripes starting with the vertical stripes, then the diagonal stripes. Don’t worry if the white lines are not entirely straight at this point. With a thin striper or thin brush, touch up the white stripes between colors. I prefer to use acrylic paint as it’s easy to make straight and thin lines.

    SLIDE 10 OF 12
  • Step 10:

For the last touch, use China Glaze Fairy Dust to put some sparkles in the mosaic. Don’t use too much of this glitter as we don’t want to cover the mosaic completely.

    SLIDE 11 OF 12
  • Step 11:

Last step: top coat! Use two coats. It will help smooth everything out and give a nice glossy finish. Just be sure to be cautious when adding top coat to your striped nails so your clean lines don't smear! Then you’re done!
