Fall brings darker hues but definitely does not tone down creativity. With black polish, matte top coat, and a dotting tool, quickly transform summery neon talons into a sophisticated monochrome manicure. Nail It! magazine and pro manicurist Allison Stout show how the look is done.

Nail It! tip: Don’t have a dotting tool at the ready? Unbend a bobby pin and use the rounded tip to apply small spots of lacquer onto nails.

Step 1: Apply two coats of black polish and allow them to dry thoroughly.

Step 2: Apply one coat of matte top coat to the entire nail and allow it to dry.

Step 3: Use the tip of a dotting tool to pick up dots of black polish and place onto nails.

Step 4: No additional top coat is necessary for this design, as you want a matte-meets-shine contrast to make a chic statement. Done!
