Nail Art Tutorial: Holo Moons

For all you lacquer lovers out there – this manicure uses 16 polishes – which may just be a record! Try out this shiny style yourself and break out some previously unused bottles by following these steps by @morenailpolish from Canberra, Australia!

What you’ll need:

  • Makeup sponges for the gradient
  • Half moon nail vinyls or hole punch reinforcement stickers.
  • A set of five colors of polish where you have one crème and two shades of holographic
  • A silver holographic polish as the palest color on all nails

@Morenailpolish used:

Yellow

  • Crème – OPI I Can’t Cope-a-cabanana
  • Dark holo shade – JOSS Alternate Dimension
  • Medium holo shade – Dance Legend New Messiah
  • Light holo shade – Dance Legend T-1000

Blue

  • Crème – OPI No Room for the Blues
  • Dark holo shade – OPI DS Glamour
  • Medium holo shade – Dance Legend High Voltage
  • Light holo shade – Dance Legend T-1000

Pink

Purple

Green

  • Step 1

    Start with a skittle manicure with each crème color on one nail.  When that is fully dry, apply the half moon nail vinyls.

  • Step 2

    Starting with the first color (yellow), apply the three holo shades to the makeup sponge and gently press it to your nail a few times with the darkest shade next to the half moon vinyl.

  • Step 3

    Move on to the next finger while you allow the first finger to dry. Apply the three shades of holo polish and apply it to the nail.

  • Step 4

    Repeat with color 3 (blue).

    Repeat with color 4 (purple).

  • Step 6

    Repeat with color 5 (green).

  • Step 7

    Go back to your first nail (yellow) and repeat steps 3 – 7 to gradually build up the opacity of the holo polish to your desired level.

  • Step 8

    Carefully remove the half moon nail vinyls with tweezers.

  • Step 9

    Finish your manicure with your favorite top coat.

    Admire your work in bright light or the sun!
