By now, the hottest nail color trend of the summer, neons, is (hopefully) taking up space on your tips. But if you want to take your brightest designs above and beyond the norm, take a cue from celebrity manicurist Julie Kandalec. She created the nervy nail art for Nail It!’s July/August 2015 cover and for our neon trend story, “Age of Embrightenment,” on page 46. If you’re craving this insider’s intel on how she created some of these designs, you’re in luck! We’ve got the lowdown for a few of her boldest looks, starting with this “Turned Up” decal design.

(Check back in with nailitmag.com for two more how-tos, plus Kandalec’s guide to shopping nails in Japan and her top neon tips!)

  • Step 3

Cut your decal into a square the size of the full nail. Then, carefully cut a rounded arc out of the decal. Tip! Try to align the apex of your arc with the chevron of the decal design.

    SLIDE 3 OF 5
  • Step 4

Carefully apply the decal to the nail, leaving room between the black half moon and the decal. Use a file and, with a downward motion, file off the excess decal from the nail tip. Apply a layer of top coat to seal in the design.

    SLIDE 4 OF 5
  • Step 5

Using nail glue, affix a black square rhinestone on the white band between the black half moon and the decal. Affix a white rhinestone directly below it, in the center of the half moon. Apply an extra layer of top coat to seal in the entire design.
