Nail artist Kelly Ornstein shows you how to recreate these Manish Arora-inspired nail art designs.

No matter if you like a little bit of nail art or a lot, we have you covered with our “Less + More” column in Nail It!. For the March/April 2015 issue, we tasked New York-based nail artist Kelly Ornstein (@kellyohstein) with creating both subtle and all-out nail art designs based on this “Embarrassment of Riches” Manish Arora sweater and skirt combo from the spring 2015 runway. Follow these step-by-steps for the designs!

Less_Tip_1_March_2015“Embarrassment of Riches” Minimal How-To

Polishes you need:

Less-Thumb-Ring-PinkySteps for the thumb, ring and pinky fingers:
Step 1: After applying base coat, paint a nude, skin-tone or sheer color over the nail.
Step 2: Using pink polish, make a “V” at the base of the nail.
Step 3: Add bright red crescent shape halfway down the nail.
Step 4: Using dark gold polish and a striper brush, outline all nail shapes. Let it dry completely.
Step 5: Randomly apply nail foil glue to the pink and red sections only. Wait for it to turn clear.
Step 6: Cut nail art transfer foil into a square and then dab it onto the pink and red shapes, pressing down evenly.
Step 7: Apply matte top coat to complete the nails.
Less-Pointer-MiddleSteps for pointer and middle fingers:
Step 1: After applying base coat, use two coats of the same nude, skin-tone or sheer color over the entire nail.
Step 2: Apply matte top coat and, while still wet, sprinkle gold caviar beads over top, concentrating them more toward the tip of the nail.

Polishes you need:

More-ThumbThe thumb:
Step 1: After applying base coat, polish the nail in two coats of a rosy taupe.
Step 2: Using copper polish, create a Ruffian detail along the cuticle area. Paint a thicker taupe stripe down the middle of the nail.
Step 3: Using medium blue, create a shape one-quarter inch up the nail that has a heart-curved bottom and pointed top (like a balconette shape).
Step 4: With gold and a striper brush, outline both the Ruffian and blue shape. Then, inside the blue shape, paint three gold diagonal stripes on one side and three opposing diagonal stripes on the other side.
Step 5: Using holographic blue polish, polish the center section of the blue shape. Using a light blue polish, paint some of the sections in the blue shape.
Step 6: Paint an upside-down red heart within the blue shape. The point of the red heart should line up with the point of your balconette shape. Outline the heart in gold.
Step 7: Add two pink stripes directly below blue to light blue stripes and outline in gold, leaving a stripe of rose taupe down the center.
Step 8: Use nail glue for all of the following: a blue rhinestone at the point of the heart; tiny silver caviar beads lining the balconette shape; and a gold metal heart on top of the red heart.
Step 9: Outline the taupe stripe near the tip of the nail with thick lines of gold. With a dotting tool, drop beads of white polish on the two thick lines of gold. While the white dots are still wet, place a gold nail-art bead on top of each one. Add two half-round ball studs to the center of the taupe stripe.
Step 10: Use nail glue to affix five pink rhinestones along the outline of the balconette near the bottom of the nail. Add dimension to the stones by dotting each with white polish.
Step 11: Add half-round ball studs between pink rhinestones, making a small pyramid in center.
Step 12: Add gold nail-art beads to the left and right of the pyramid, and then dot these beads with white polish.
Step 13: Add a square stud to center of the Ruffian shape. Then, apply a clear rectangle rhinestone on either side of the stud; followed by half-round studs, rectangle rhinestones and half-round studs on the corners of Ruffian.
More-PointerThe pointer finger:
Step 1: Paint the nail with two coats of medium blue polish and allow it to dry.
Step 2: Cover with holographic top coat and allow it to dry. Apply a layer of glossy top coat.
Step 3: Using nail glue, apply three rows of crystal cabochons near the cuticle, leaving space at the top-row corners.
Step 4: Add half-round ball studs in those corners and across the top row of crystals.
More-MiddleThe middle finger:
Step 1: Paint the nail with two coats of light blue polish and allow it to dry.
Step 2: Cover with a holographic top coat.
Step 3: Add a copper Ruffian design at the cuticle. Cover with topcoat.
Step 4: Using nail glue, affix a prefabricated plastic rose to the center of the nail. Tip! You can add dimension to your rose by sponging light pink and white polish over the petals.
Step 5: Using nail glue, affix dark pink rhinestones along the perimeter of the rose, creating a circle. Add a dot of white on each using a dotting tool.
Step 6: Between the spaces of the pink stones, attach tiny gold nail-art beads.
Step 7: Where the Ruffian meets the blue polish, use white polish and a dotting tool to create an arc of dots.
Step 8: Glue five larger nail-art studs on top of the Ruffian.
More-RingThe ring finger:
Step 1: Repeat Steps 1 through 5 from the thumb tutorial.
Step 2: Paint an orange triangle below the balconette and a larger pink triangle above it. Outline in both in gold using a striper brush. Cover with top coat.
Step 3: Using nail-art glue, add a gold star in the pink triangle; one half-round stud at the tip of the nail; and two half-round studs in the center and at the point of orange triangle.
Step 4: Add five dark pink rhinestones along the curve of the balconette shape and dot each with white polish.
Step 5: Add silver nail-art beads along the copper Ruffian detail and the top edge of the balconette shape.
Step 6: Add three gold nail-art beads to either side of the pink triangle.
Step 7: Finish by accenting the Ruffian as you did the thumb: follow Step 13 of the thumb tutorial.
More-PinkyThe pinky:
Step 1: Follow Steps 1 through 3 from the middle finger tutorial.
Step 2: Use a large dotting tool and white polish to dot white circles along the edge of the copper Ruffian detail.
Step 3: Glue large round studs on the Ruffian.
Step 4: Glue a large pink rhinestone on the center of the nail. Using a dotting tool, add a pink dot of polish onto the middle of the stone.
Step 5: Outline the pink rhinestone with tiny gold nail-art beads. Add a second ring of gold nail-art beads, but keep them spaced out.
Step 6: Using your dotting tool and white polish, dot each nail art bead on the outer ring.
Step 7: Finish by gluing a small round stud to very center of the pink rhinestone and add a gold star stud to the nail tip. —Francesca Moisin
