How to Build a Light Box to Take Better Nail Photos

Are you trying to get your nail designs noticed? It’s no coincidence that the most emulated nail artists out there are the ones who have both well-painted designs and flawless lighting. That soft, white lighting isn’t difficult or expensive to get, all you need is a light box!

To easily make one of your own at home, you’ll need a medium to large-sized box, scissors or box cutters, white tissue papers, and either white fabric or white poster board. See the steps below!

  • Step 1:

Begin with your box. Decide which side you would like the back of the light box to be, depending on the size and shape of the box you use. If you use the bottom of the box as the back, you can cut off the top flaps of the box right away. That open hole will be the front of the light box.

  • Step 2:

Cut out the top, both sides, and front (if you haven’t already) of the box, leaving a 1 inch border remaining.

  • Step 3:

Cut three sheets of tissue paper: one to fit the top, left side, and right side of the box. Tape each to the respective side.

  • Step 4:

Cut a long sheet of poster board or a long, thick piece of white fabric that will stretch seamlessly across the back and bottom of the box. Tape it in place.

  • Step 5:

Play with your lighting. One easy way to go is to place a small desk lamp on either side of your box. You can also add one on top. See which arrangement works best with your camera and happy photographing!
